Property vs. Freedom: Beyond Copyright
Instructor: Lance Rose
Review from the CFP96 Newsletter
(MCLE Credit Applied For)
We've all heard, "information wants to be free," but it's more
compelling as a mystical aphorism than as a useful description of
information access and control. Moving past aphorisms, how do property
stakes in cyberspace affect our freedom to go where we want, and send
and receive information as we please? This tutorial will explain the
basics of new and expanding online property regimes such as trademarks,
trade secrets, bounded regions created by computer security techniques,
and even copyrights, from the perspectives of both property owners and
those who chafe at proprietary constraints.
Lance Rose, Esq., is author of NetLaw - Your Rights in the Online World,
and an attorney with Lewis and Roca in Phoenix, AZ.
